Sweethearts Expressing their Love

Love Lock have been considered one of Cologne's most charming traditions. As proof of their love, couples fix padlocks to the railings on the Hohenzollern Bridge; to ensure everlasting love, they then throw the key into the Rhine river. Experts estimate that the padlocks weigh over two tonnes, and more padlocks appear on a daily basis, as not just the residents of Cologne but also tourists want to become part of the tradition. It is thought that the romantic custom originated in Italy. Overtime, tens of thousands of couples and friends in Cologne have shown their loyalty to one another in their way.

40,000 padlocks hang on the bridge to date. A shocking number considering that the tradition only started in 2008; that means 40,000 couples- 80,000 individuals in all have participated in this fast growing, spontaneous collection. This is a trend seems to be catching on the world over, similar bridge scapes can now be seen in Edinburgh, Paris, Moscow, London, and Leeds.

In fengyuan, Taiwan, love padlocks affixed to an overpass at the city's train station are often affixed in Paris. These locks are known as "wish locks" and local legend holds that the magnetic field generated by trains passing underneath will cause energy to accumulate in the locks and fulfill the wishes. On a fountain in Montevideo in Uruguay, a plague is affixed to the front of the fountain that provides an explanation in both English and Spanish. "If a lock with the initials of two people in love is placed in it, they will return together to the fountain and their love will be forever locked".💏
